Bresdin:

July 11th - July 15th

This week by far was the one week Victoria and I felt the most prepared for. Programming and video game making is just what we do and preparation was much easier than previous weeks. We learned Scratch Programming, had two empowering guest speakers, Unity 2D, Unity 3D and C# programming. This week was packed full of lessons and fun, but it was still a rough week on me. I became ill after an allergic reaction to something and this caused my body to hurt and feel fatigued the entire week.

This made it extremely difficult to be aware, and be present for the girls. We had such a problem with one girl that her mother was notified and she no longer attended camp. I took this personally very hard because I felt like I had failed this girl. If I had been more present I could have helped her more this week. I had a lot of support from Anthony and Victoria and Lauren to help me feel better about myself but what finally did it in the end was another girl's success on Friday.

This particular girl has been with us for all 3 weeks of camp and when she started in week 1 she refused to participate and loved to cause distraction to the other girls. She only cared about eating and having snack or lunch time. The second week was slightly better and she participated much more but on Friday of THIS week, she was working on the Pixel animation at www.piskel.com and we called everyone for lunch. She looked at me and said, I am enjoying myself so much right now I do not want to go to lunch.” I commented with, “You like something more than lunch?” Her reply made me laugh, smile and forget how rough the week had felt to me. “I know, that’s crazy right?”

This interaction proves that girls are advancing and growing in only 3 weeks of time has made this entire summer worth all the hard work and toil we have put in. I am truly blessed to have been apart of such an amazing adventure and I hope to see all these girls in the future as they become empowered women in their community!
